The Chic Mom: Tailoring Your Style Post-Baby

By Shannon Bussnick, LSW

Let’s face it: my current style is a touch on the casual side right now. Oversized tees and yoga pants have quickly become my norm, and in this season of transformation, I’m okay with that. Because despite the attire, I know my style, preferences, and the shades of black I daydream about throwing over multiple layers of bed-head.

While I navigate through the joys and chaos of motherhood with three tots in tow, I envision a day when I’ll have the time (energy, really) to delve into my oddly colorful yet dimly lit wardrobe, sifting through old brass rings.

Yes, I imagine myself striding in combat boots instead of teetering on strappy heels, swapping stiff totes for easy-going cross-bodies, and opting for well-fitted bottoms to avoid any unsolicited reveals during the school drop-off (if you’re a relic of the VS PINK coupon and low-rise denim era, you feel me).

Transitioning into motherhood doesn’t necessitate a style overhaul. It’s about tweaking your fashion choices to align with your new routine, ensuring a blend of comfort and practicality. And if you’re not ready for that, that’s perfectly fine! This is your narrative, not anyone else’s. If heels make you happy, strut your stuff. If sneakers are your jam, lace them up. The key is to dress for yourself, and nobody else. It’s also perfectly natural if your style evolves during this new chapter of life – because so are you.

Ready to embrace and elevate your style as a new mom? Here are a few ideas:

Adapt, Don’t Overhaul:

Your love for skinny jeans, mom jeans, or whatever jean that abides by your generation’s standards, now may find a companion in comfy leggings, and stilettos may step aside for classic leather flats. Embrace the practical without sacrificing your edge.

Confidence is Timeless:

It’s a well-worn saying, but confidence truly is the best accessory you can sport. Whether it’s a chic suit or yoga pants, wear it with the aplomb of a mom who’s got it all under control – because you do. And if you don’t, we’ll than your just like the other 99% of us.

Versatility is Key:

A versatile wardrobe is a mom’s secret weapon. Invest in transitional pieces that can take you from playgrounds to date nights effortlessly. A chic blazer can elevate a casual outfit, while a classic dress multitasks with ease.

Comfort Meets Chic:

Comfort is non-negotiable, but that doesn’t mean style has to be sacrificed. Welcome soft fabrics, stretchy waistbands, and practical footwear into your repertoire, all without compromising on trendiness. Feeling a tad uninspired? A fresh pair of sunglasses can work wonders.

Embrace the Mom Uniform:

Every mom has her signature outfit, be it jeans and a tee, a stylish maxi dress, or athleisure gear. Discover what makes you feel fabulous and make it your own.

Style is not about conforming; it’s about celebrating your uniqueness amidst new experiences. You’re a mom, yes, but you’re still the fabulous you. Adapt your wardrobe to the new rhythms of life, but let your personality come through.

Remember, style transcends the clothes you wear; it’s embodied in how you carry yourself – with a blend of flair, confidence, and unapologetic grace.

See you next time.
