Chasing the Right Idea: Navigating the Shaky Place Between Inspiration and Invention

By: Shannon Bussnick, LSW

Sometimes, I stumble upon a grand idea—you know, the one that feels like it will change everything, right here, right now. But then comes the reality check; the faceplant into doubt—is this idea original; does it make sense; is it worth pursuing?

The questions quickly pile up.

Will this decision lead me in the right direction? Should I have explored one of the countless other ideas that shuffled through my mind? How can I finally ‘make it’ this time? These thoughts can pull us in every direction, creating uncertainty about where to focus our energy.

Digging through the Overwhelm of Possibilities

It’s easy to get lost in the endless possibilities of creativity. The endless itch of being, and re-being.

Am I more successful when I have fewer ideas competing for attention, denying some expansion along the way? Or is it better to trust my instincts, stay consistent, and push through these barriers? Allowing all of the ideas the space and respect to breathe and simmer.

This is a headspace that shakes me every time I enter it.

Why does my mind flood with ideas if they don’t all carry meaning or deserve nourishment? There’s an undeniable mystery in this dilemma. Am I merely skimming the surface of dream-catching, or am I chasing the wrong kite altogether? And where—if anywhere—do I go from here?

Finding Clarity Amidst Chaos

Ultimately, all we can do is follow what feels right. A bit disappointing? A generic response if you will, but trust that it’s far from. Keep moving toward the ideas that ignite a spark, and don’t let the hard work ahead deter you. The key lies not just in the idea itself but in how it resonates—how it stirs something inside that won’t let you rest until you’ve given it your all.

Even if our contentment and success rest solely in the Journey of “following our passion,” and not necessarily as an end to a means, we mustn’t neglect its implication in our life’s creation and unfolding.

In the end, stress and challenges are part of the creative journey. We know this. It’s not about the sheer number of grand ideas; it’s about landing on the one that feels meant for you—the one that connects with your soul. That’s where the real joy lies. Not in the impressive ideas we conjure, but in the ones that truly reflect who we are, who we aspire to be, and how we see the world.

And might I add, how could this possibly look the same us as unique beings? Talk about the possibilities that could exist—the discoveries that could be made—without comparison, competition, and self-deception (or deception of others) distracting us.

What if we collectively went for what we wanted, like really wanted, what would happen then?

Grounding Your Vision: Techniques for Clarity

To connect with your innermost self and ground your vision, consider creating a mood board—whether physical, digital, or mental. Start by gathering images, words, or concepts that resonate deeply with you. Allow these elements to capture your attention so intensely that they become integral to your creative masterpiece.

This process enables you to filter through the noise, honing in on the ideas that fuel your motivation and excitement. As you fill your mood board, pay attention to recurring themes and concepts. These are the ideas worth your focus.

Implement Creative Techniques for Clarity

1. Ask Yourself the “Miracle Question”: Envision your ideal life—if all your dreams could come true, what would it look like? Picture it in vivid detail: your surroundings, feelings, relationships, and achievements. This mental exercise can clarify what truly matters to you, guiding your decisions and actions.

2. Carry a Motivating Token: Keep a small object in your pocket or bag that inspires you—a folded note with a personal mantra, a lucky coin, or even a fortune cookie slip. Whenever you touch or see this token, let it remind you of your goals and aspirations, providing a tangible connection to your dreams.

3. Practice Mindful Journaling: Set aside time each day to write freely about your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. This practice can help you process emotions, gain insights, and uncover patterns in your thinking. Reflecting on your entries over time can reveal clarity and direction.

4. Create a Gratitude Jar: Write down moments of gratitude, small wins, or positive experiences on slips of paper and place them in a jar. Whenever you feel overwhelmed or uncertain, read through them to remind yourself of your achievements and the joy in your journey.

5. Visualize Your Future: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself achieving your goals. Picture the steps you need to take and the emotions associated with success. This technique not only clarifies your path but also boosts your motivation to act.

6. Engage with Nature: Spend time outdoors to clear your mind and gain perspective. Nature has a unique ability to ground us and inspire creativity. Use these moments to reflect on your ideas and the direction you want to pursue.

7. Use Affirmations: Craft positive affirmations that resonate with your aspirations. Repeat them daily to reinforce your goals and build confidence. Affirmations can help shift your mindset and align your energy with your desires.

8. Develop a Vision Board: Similar to a mood board, a vision board focuses specifically on your goals. Use images, quotes, and symbols that represent your dreams. Place it somewhere visible to keep your aspirations front and center in your mind.

9. Meditate on Your Intentions: Take a few moments each day to meditate on your intentions. This practice helps center your thoughts and clarifies what you want to attract into your life. Visualize the outcomes you desire while focusing on the feelings associated with them.

Cultivate Focus and Intent

Take time to sit with these themes, allowing your focus to sharpen gradually. This clarity reveals the small steps you need to take, leading you closer to your goals. Maintaining a focused, purposeful mindset aligns your energy and intent. Instead of chasing every passing thought, you dedicate yourself to the ideas that truly light you up.

Let this process guide you forward, reminding you that your dreams are not mere fantasies but tangible realities of inspiration waiting to be invented and unfold. With intention, clarity, and persistence, you can bring them to life, one step at a time.

Conclusion: Embrace Your Unique Path

As you navigate the space between inspiration and invention, remember that your journey is uniquely yours. Each idea serves as a stepping stone, deepening your understanding of your creative purpose. Trust your instincts, cultivate clarity, and allow the ideas that resonate with your soul to guide you toward personal fulfillment and success. Embrace the process, knowing that your dreams are not just fantasies but tangible realities waiting to be released by your hands alone.
